De-addiction centre death: Man in the video not the one who killed himself, say Chennai police

Written by : TNM Staff

Following a video of a 31-year-old man being beaten by staff of a de-addiction centre surfaced and was reported to have committed suicide in Chennai later, police clarified that the patient in the video and the person who committed suicide are two different people.

Police said that both the patients were getting treatment from the same de-addiction centre- God Helping Foundation.

“The man in the video is a 50-year-old, while Kuppusamy, who committed suicide on Wednesday, was just 29,” a police officer from the Nolambur police station told The Hindu.

They also added that Kuppusamy had killed himself due to a family problem and the family members claimed that he was not beaten up at the de-addiction centre.

Family members told the officer that he was depressed as his wife Ammu had left him and he was working outside the city.

The officer added that both the incidents are not linked together.
