Criticising judges: HC asks Vairamuthu to reply to contempt case

The Madras High Court has sent a notice to lyricist Vairamuthu Ramaswamy on Wednesday asking him to reply to a contempt of court case filed against him on 13th October, 2015.

A petition of ‘contempt of court’ was filed against the lyricist by film financier S Mukanchand Bothra at the Madras High Court for having made remarks about the integrity of the judges among the public.

During the centenary celebrations of Justice Kailasam, which were observed in Chennai in the month of November, Vairamuthu is reported to have made comments on the judiciary. “It is unacceptable that a Judge, who had served with integrity throughout his career, could compromise on it during the last six months/last phase of his tenure. Society could progress only if the judiciary and the fields of education, police and medicine function cleanly,” he said.

“In his speech, Vairamuthu raised doubts about the faith, integrity, purity of judges among the public, especially about judges who are on the verge of retirement. The impression one gets from such a statement is that all judges get corrupt towards the end of their term,”  Mr. Bothra told The Hindu.

Vairamuthu Ramaswami is a national award winning Tamil poet and lyricist whose works such as Thanner Theesam and Karuvaachi Kaaviyam have been translated into many languages including Hindi and English.
