AIADMK pits Gokulakrishnan for Rajya Sabha from Puducherry

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa on Friday announced N. Gokulakrishnan as the AIADMK candidate for the Rajya Sabha seat from Puducherry.

In a statement issued here, Jayalalithaa, who is also AIADMK general secretary, said Gokulakrishnan was the party's candidate in the ensuing Rajya Sabha elections in Puducherry.

The election for the Rajya Sabha seat from Puducherry is scheduled for September 28.

The AIADMK has five legislators in the 30-member Puducherry assembly and its candidate is expected to romp home victorious with the support of the ruling NR Congress, which has 15 members.

The Congress has seven members, the DMK two and one is an Independent.

Congress leader and sitting member P. Kannan is set to retire from the Rajya Sabha next month.
