Bowlers steal the show for Sunrisers Hyd as MI collapse chasing low total

Written by : Dushyant Srivatsa

The Sunrisers Hyderabad pulled off an incredible 31-run victory over the Mumbai Indians who were chasing a small total of 118.

The Sunrisers bowling lineup was injury stricken as both Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Billy Stanlake had to sit out, but the team was still able to pull off the second-lowest successful defence in IPL history.

It was an all-around effort by the Sunrisers’ bowling lineup, with all 6 bowlers picking up wickets. Siddarth Kaul extended his impressive run in the tournament by picking up 3 for 23 in his 4 overs. The star of the show for SRH was Rashid Khan whose spell turned the game on its head. He finished with 2 for 11 in 4 overs. This included 16 dot balls and a maiden in the seventeenth over of the Mumbai innings.

Rashid Khan, who had conceded 104 runs in his previous 8 overs of the tournament, bounced back in fine fashion to pick up the Man of the Match award. After the match, Rashid credited his performance to the coaching staff. “First of all thanks to mighty Allah for such a performance after a few bad games. It was needed for me. I learnt a lot of things and had a good chat with the coaching staff - Moody, Murali, Laxman - and I just relaxed and enjoyed myself. Murali told that whatever happens you have to be relaxed and be calm, and do the basics right. Credit to how the management have kept us whether we win or lose.”

After being put into bat, the Sunrisers were hit early by Mitchell McClenaghan, who picked up both Shikhar Dhawan and Wriddhiman Saha in the space of 3 balls. Manish Pandey joined his captain Kane Williamson at the crease and the pair put on the biggest partnership of the innings - 24 runs in the third wicket. Manish was dismissed in the fifth over for 16 and Kane Williamson followed him back after three-and-a-half over for 29.

Yusuf Pathan and Mohammed Nabi were the only remaining batsmen who managed to take their individual score to double-digits as the Sunrisers collapsed and were bowled out in the nineteenth over for 118. This was also the Sunrisers’ second-lowest total in tournament history.

Mayank Markande continued his good form with the ball as he picked up 2 wickets whilst conceding just 15 runs in his 3 overs. Hardik Pandya and Mitchell McClenaghan also picked up 2 wickets.

Mumbai’s batting was underwhelming, to say the least. After getting off to a disastrous start that left the team at 21 for 3, Krunal Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav steadied the ship as the duo put on 40 for the fourth wicket. When Krunal was dismissed for 24, it started a collapse that Mumbai was not able to recover from. The team lost its last 6 wickets for just 26 runs as SRH pulled off an incredible recovery to win the game quite comfortably.
