If you grew up with cable television in the 1990s and early 2000s, you would remember the futuristic cartoon family “The Jetsons”, and the amazing machine in their house that simply manufactured, on the spot, whatever food you wanted. A new pop-restaurant coming up in London may not quite have got there, but it certainly seems like a sign of things to come.

Food Ink, which will open from 25-27 July in London before moving on around the world, gives its patrons a first-of-its-kind meal: consisting of dishes printed out of a 3-D printer. A select set of diners will be served a nine-course meal designed by chefs Joel Castanye and Mateu Blanch, and 3-D printed by live by a team of chefs, artists and technologists. And it’s not just the food, various other components of the dining experience from tables and chairs to the cutlery and crockery will also be 3-D printed.

For those who can’t be a part of the select group, the event will also be livestreamed online, so viewers at home can watch this technological hack on fine dining unfold.
