German car manufacturer, Volkswagen announced that they will recall 3.23 lakh vehicles in India on Tuesday, reported Times Now.   

This comes after the NGT wrote to the central government and the company seeking their response to the proposed ban  for allegedly violating India's emission norms on Monday. 

NDTV reports, a bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Swatanter Kumar issued a notice to the Ministry of Heavy Industries & Public Enterprises, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Central Pollution Control Board and Volkswagen group, asking them to reply by December 23.

This comes after a Delhi-based school teacher, Saloni Ailawadi filed a petition seeking a ban on the car manufacturer.

He referred to Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI)'s recent report saying that Volkswagen and its group companies in India were "polluting the environment in blatant disregard to regulations" by selling vehicles which produce nitrogen oxide nine times higher than the prescribed limit.

India Today reported that NGT wants Volkswagen to pay an additional monetary penalty for causing damage to the environment.

Earlier in September this year, Volkswagen was caught in a storm when a small research team in the US found out that Volkswagen was cheating using “defeat devices" which met clean-air standards during official emissions testing, but turned off during normal operations.

Following this, Volkswagen admitted to cheating diesel emissions tests in the United States, in a scandal which it says may affect 11 million of its cars.
