Scotland has decided to stay at home rejecting independence from the 307-year-old union with the United Kingdom.

Prime Minister David Cameron who woke-up late to the threat of independence and then went on an over-drive said he was “delighted” that 55 percent of Scotland had rejected calls for independence. Pollsters had predicted a close-call, but as results came in, the margin of victory was comfortable for Cameron, but not comfortable enough to breathe a complete sigh of relief.

“The people of Scotland have spoken and it is a clear result…they have kept our country of four nations together,” said the Prime Minister. Later he spoke to Alex Salmond, the leader of the Scottish National Party and first minister of Scotland who led the campaign for secession over two years.

The geographical union remains intact but the political union will have to begin soon as the vote showed that 1.6 million Scottish residents have voted against staying in the family sending the strongest ever signal to 10, Downing Street that their demands must now be met, states a report by The Telegraph. One of the most contentious issues was North Sea oil with Salmond stressing throughout the campaign that if free, Scotland would be one of the richest countries in the world.
