Our constitution says every child has the right to take formal education, which madrasas do not provide," the report quotes State Minorities Affairs Minister Eknath Khadse as saying.Khadse added, "If a Hindu or Christian child wants to study in a madrasa, they will not be allowed to study there. Thus, madrasa is not a school but a source of religious education. Thus we have asked them to teach students other subjects as well. Otherwise these madrasas will be considered as non schools."He said that their only aim in doing so was to ensure that children hailing from the minority community get a chance to learn and enter mainstream and have better job prospects. He also said that the Principal Secretary of Minority Affairs department has written a letter on this issue to Principal Secretary of School Education and Sports, adds the report. 550 of the 1,890 registered madrasas in Maharashtra have agreed to teach the subjects, according to the minister.President of AIMIM Asaduddin Owaisi questioned the move asking whether students being imparted Vedic education will also be considered out of school students. "There are many Madrasas that are teaching Maths, English and Science. Many Madarasa students have gone ahead and cracked civil service exam," Owaisi reportedly said.
