The UN General Assembly has decided to take up the proposal made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the Annual General Assembly and has declared June 21 as International Day of Yoga, according to a report on Hindustan Times.

The proposal has received the unprecedented approval of 175 countries that have joined as co-sponsors to the idea, said the report. Apart from declaring June 21 as International Day of Yoga, the resolution also includes the dissemination of information about the benefits of practising yoga, according to the report.

The resolution that was prepared by India during the annual UN general assembly received overwhelming response when 175 out of 193 nations belonging to the UN general Assembly showcased support by becoming co-sponsors and is the largest number of co-sponsorship witnessed for a UNGA resolution, said the report.

During the Assembly, Modi had justified the reason for imposing June 21 as the date for this proposal because it had special significance in India and was also the longest day in the northern hemisphere.

According to the report the resolution will be adopted by the Global Health and Foreign Policy.
