The reason for the removal of the movie would be that the salute of the three fingers raised with the other hand on the mouth has now been adopted as a protest salute by the anti-coup protestors. In May this year, Thailand witnessed a political coup by the Royal Thai Army, which took over governance after six months of political crisis in the country. There were many protests against the army in the past six months. With the release of the new Hunger Games movie, Mockingjay – Part I, the anti-coup protestors took the salute from the movie and adopted it as their official salute. They have reportedly adopted the three-finger salute to mean the three values of Liberty, Equality and Fraternity – just like the French Revolution. The anti-coup group has reportedly bought 150 out of 200 available tickets for the movie at those theatres. The theatre owners have said that they removed the movie, as they did not want their theatres to be used for any political activism.
