You could be Mukesh Ambani, Vidya Balan, or a random person on the street, but you would all have one thing in common: mosquito bites.

In varying degrees, mosquitos are a problem in large parts of India, causing diseases that at worst, can claim lives.

Dr. Pankaj Singhai, Head of the Department of Internal Medicine, Manipal Hospitals, says there is usually a spurt in cases of mosquito-borne diseases every year after the monsoons. And this year is no different.

According to the union health ministry, 36,000 people have been affected by dengue, 14,650 by chikungunya and 800,000 by malaria so far this year, the BBC reported. Some of the worst-affected states are West Bengal, Odisha, Kerala, Karnataka, Delhi and Maharashtra.

A total of 1,378 cases of dengue and nearly double the number - 2,625 cases - of chikungunya were reported in the national capital until September 17. Delhi has recorded over 30 deaths due to vector-borne diseases. 

Several other parts of the country are also fighting an outbreak of the mosquito-borne diseases. 322 cases of dengue and 6,695 cases of malaria have also been reported in Haryana this season.
