Comedian Bill Cosby was brought into a courthouse in Montgomery County on Wednesday to face charges, pertaining to a case of sexual assault filed in 2004 and was later released on a bail of $1 million.

"The charge by the Montgomery County District Attorney's Office came as no surprise, filed 12 years after the alleged incident and coming on the heels of a hotly contested election for this county's DA during which this case was made the focal point," Cosby’s attorneys said.

They added, "Make no mistake, we intend to mount a vigorous defense against this unjustified charge and we expect that Mr. Cosby will be exonerated by a court of law."

In the case filed in 2004 in Montgomery County, Cosby faces three felony charges of aggravated indecent assault.

He is accused of drugging and sexually assaulting Andrea Constand – a former Temple University employee – when she visited his Philadelphia home in 2004.

Constand was the first of nearly 50 women to have gone public, with allegations of sexual assault.

Cosby has maintained his innocence all along and denied any wrongdoing.

Newly elected Montgomery County prosecutor Kevin Steele said on Wednesday that prosecutors decided to charge Cosby after taking the available evidence into account “because it was the right thing to do”.

Cosby was booked at the police station in Cheltenham Township as per protocol but was let off on a bail of $1 million.
