The News Minute| July, 27, 2014| 4.00 pm ISTFew police officers from the Kollam district in Kerala re facing an inquiry after theatre actor Hima Shankar lodged a complaint that they detained her and a male friend, in what she alleges to be a clear case of moral policing.Hima in her complaint to the Police Complaints Authority has said that on the night of July 23. Hima and her friend Shriram Ramesh were apprehended by officers at near Kollam, as they were travelling towards Thiruvananthapuram on a bike. They were taken to Kollam East police station.Hima says the officers insulted her for travelling with a male friend in the night, and in spite of showing all relevant documents like drivers license and vehicle insurance, continued to make fun of the couple.The duo were then taken to the police station and in spite of Shriram Ramesh’s father reaching the police station within two hours and giving statement that they were just friends, they were not let off till morning. Hima has told media that she has recorded parts of the ‘demeaning’ conversations and subsequently launched a complaint.Shriram and Hima, both part of a theatre group were travelling to Thirivananthapuram in the night, as they had a play rehearsal in the city.Hima Shankar has written to the Women’s Commission, state human rights commission and Kerala Home Minister asking for an inquiry into the police’s actions.
