After a calf was slaughtered recently by Youth Congress workers at a public place in Kannur, the party has sought police protection for their workers who were involved in the incident.

The Youth Congress filed a petition with state DGP TP Senkumar on Sunday alleging a death threat to the workers from right wing people.

“I have seen Facebook post by a swami, threatening to kill the workers who were involved in the incident. I have mailed the complaint along with the video of the post. The threat was in Hindi and the swami, we believe is someone from North India,” Youth Congress state president Dean Kuriakose told The News Minute.

On May 27, Youth wing workers of the Congress had slaughtered a calf in Kannur as a mark of protest against the Centre's ban on cattle trade for slaughter. 

Two days later, the Congress suspended three Youth Congress workers Riji Makutty, Joshi Kandathil and Sharafuddin Katampally. Rijil Makutty is Youth Congress Kannur Parliament constituency committee president.

The incident had attracted severe criticism from various quarters at the national level.

Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi had termed the incident as thoughtless and barbaric.

On June 1, eight persons including Rijil Makkutty, who led the protest, were arrested by Kannur City police on charges of causing public nuisance and for violation of public order.

Police had registered a case against the accused under Section 120 A of the Kerala Police Act.

The other accused in the case are Joshy Kandathil, Sudeep James, Justison Chandykolli, Safaruddien Kattampally, TA Hari and MK Varun. All of them were arrested but are out on bail now.
