The Kerala government on Thursday sanctioned Rs 5 lakh compensation for the family of the 65-year-old woman Sheeluamma who was devoured by dozens of stray dogs here.

The attack on August 19 took place barely 10 km from the state secretariat.

Speaking to the media soon after the cabinet meeting, Local Administration Minister K.T. Jaleel said: "We have also sanctioned an ex-gratia of Rs 50,000 to another lady who was also attacked by dogs the same day. We gave this amount as this was the only application before the government."

Jaleel said the state government will only be able to go forward as per the law when it comes to tackling stray dogs who have attacked many children and women.
