Heavy rains pound Kerala, residents forced to vacate homes in some areas

As heavy rains continue to lash the state, the sea rage which started in the coastal regions of Thiruvananthapuram and Alappuzha on Monday evening has caused people to vacate their homes.

Additional District Magistrate of Thiruvananthapuram district confirmed to The News Minute that 32 families were shifted to Valiyathura UP school on Monday night, after sea water entered their homes. “We have set up one relief camp as of now. Thirty-two families including women and children were shifted to the relief camp late last night and will remain there until we get confirmation that it is safe for them to return home,” he said.

More than 200 families were shifted to four relief camps in Alappuzha district on Monday evening. Deputy Collector Chithradharan said, “Except for Purakkad where many houses are damaged, no other damages have been reported so far.”

The MeT department has predicted that most places in Kerala are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall with thundershowers till 20 May.

“Rain occurred at many places in Kerala. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur at one or two places in Kerala till the morning of 20th,” the IMD said in a statement released on Tuesday. Wind speed of 50-60kmph, occasionally reaching 70kmph is also predicted for the next two days.
