The News Minute | June 27, 2014 | 4:19 PM IST Spelling relief to a section of Endosulfan victims, the Kerala government has said that secondary victims of the deadly pesticide will be compensated. By secondary victims, the government refers to those who were not considered directly affected by the toxicity of the pesticide according to the parameters set by the National Human Rights Commission.Kerala government said that it will provide financial compensation and free treatment facilities to the victims from the CM’s distress relief fund . Medical professionals say that one cannot classify the "secondary" victims as Endosulfan victims, but they might be affected due to the exposure to contaminated air, water and food crops.Around 128 such secondary cases have been identified by the government. A commission constituted for the Endosulfan victims said that the state should pay at least Rs 5 lakh to relatives of those who died and Rs 3 lakh to those who are fully bedridden or unable to move without help or are mentally retarded. Totally the Kerala government has recognized 5,890 victims as eligible for compensation under the NHRC guidelines.The issue relates to a toxic pesticide, Endosulfan being sprayed in the plantation corporation of India in Kasargad and other cashew plantations for more than two decades.
