After months of probing into the unnatural death of engineering student Jishnu Prannoy, the CBI has formally informed the state government of its unwillingness to take over the case.

The decision from CBI was formally communicated by CBI Chennai zone joint director through a letter sent to additional chief secretary (home) Subrata Biswas in this regard, reportsDeccan Chronicle.

The CBI argued that that it had done a review of the investigation by the state police and there was nothing else left for the CBI to probe. The officials also cited that the CBI is already burdened with a number of cases therefore there were practical reservations in taking over more probes, reports Deccan Chronicle.

Earlier this month, CBI had informed the SC that it cannot take up the probe into the death of Jishnu. The CBI officials then maintained that the probe by the Kerala police was adequate and there was no circumstances that called for an investigation by the central agency.

The SC had then outraged at CBI’s stand on investigating Jishnu Prannoy case and slammed the premier investigation agency for the delayed reply in the case.  The CBI then argued that it had not received the notification by the state government to handle over the case to it. However, Kerala government retorted saying that notification was issued on June 15 and handed over to the counsel representing the CBI.

On January 6, 2017 18-year-old Jishnu Pranoy, a first-year student of Computer Science in the Nehru College of Engineering and Research Centre in Thrissur, was found hanging in the bathroom of his college hostel. The student killed himself only hours after he was allegedly caught cheating during a semester examination. His family had alleged of torture by the college management.
