“I am not that kind of a politician,” Karnataka’s forest ecology and environment department minister Ramanath Rai said on Monday, distancing himself from the controversy over his son creating public nuisance in Kodagu.

 He was speaking at a press meet held in Mangaluru.

On Sunday, the minister’s son Deepu Rai and two of his friends were roughed up by locals for partying and allegedly creating nuisance on a private road. Reports say that they were thrashed by the locals when the three refused to leave the premises at the local resident’s demands.

Responding on the “small mistake”, the minister said that he would not pressurize anyone to save his son.

“The law of the land should apply to my son if he has committed a mistake. Small mistakes happen and if Deepu has done something which is punishable, let him be punished,'' Rai told media on Monday. “Till now, has Deepu interfered in my work? I will not interfere or pressurize anybody,” The Times of India quoted him as saying.

He also resorted to the saying that the children are no longer under parent’s control once they are grown up.
