A businessman and his family were in for a shock on Sunday when a pure vegetarian restaurant in Bengaluru allegedly served his family and friends chicken biryani.

Thirty-two-year-old  Hemant Khinwasara, resident of Chikpete went for a dinner outing to Rangoli Veg Pure Multi-Cuisine Restaurant in Gandhinagar, where they are regular customers.

Hemant said that he along with a dozen people when to dine at the restaurant at 9:30pm.

“We ordered jeera rice and veg biryani. The women and the kids noticed some big pieces in the biryani but assumed they were mushroom or paneer. Later, the elders realized it was chicken biryani,” said Hemant.

TOI reported that, by the time the family had realised, the chef and the waiters had fled via the back door instead of talking to the customers. The biryani was meant for a customer staying in the hotel.

Ashwin Semlani, who was with Hemant said that only after they called the control room did the waiters agree that they served the wrong order.

“When we spoke to some people outside the restaurant, we were told it regularly prepares non-vegetarian fare for hotel customers. We found chicken pieces even in the kitchen,” Hemant said.

Semlani who is also a member of Jain Foundation has submitted a complaint at Upparpet police station. The police said that they would issue a warning to the restaurant. The family would move the consumer court after consulting other vegetarian communities, reported TOI.

“The act amounts to hurting the principles and religious values of all vegetarians and misguiding them. It is also against the rules which restaurants and hotels are mandated to follow,” said Sajjan Raj Mehta, chairman, Jain Coordination Committee.

DCP (west) Labhu Ram said that police have taken up a non-cognizable report (NCR). After investigation, court permission is needed to proceed with arrests in NCR cases.
