Third debt-ridden farmer commits suicide in Mandya district

This is the third such incident being reported from the region in the last 15 days.According to a report in The Times of India, villagers claimed that 37-year-old Shivalinge Gowda took his own life after he was issued notice by the Mandya branch of State Bank of India (SBI) on Saturday to repay Rs 2.3 lakh loan he had borrowed one year ago."The victim's relatives told us that bank officials visited his house and warned him of legal consequences if he failed to repay the loan," a police official was quoted as saying. Gowda was cultivating paddy and sugarcane in his field. The villagers protested by keeping the body on the main road and refused a post-mortem until district minister M H Ambareesh visited the spot announced compensation for the family of Gowda, who is survived his wife and two children, added the report.The police are also probing if there was any other reason for the suicide.
