The News Minute | August 11, 2014 | 09:23 am ISTHaircutting shops in Koliwad village in Hubli taluk, Karnataka, have been closed shut for over a month now refusing to give haircuts to Dalits, states a report by The Pioneer. The Savita Samaj (barber community) in the village have allegedly refused haircuts to Dalits because they fear that the upper caste people would not allow them to give haircuts to Dalits in their shops. Nearly 100 Dalit families living in the village have sought help from the government against the discrimination they are facing. The problem is said to have arose when a few Dalits were denied haircut in one of the saloons a few weeks ago after villagers of the upper caste objected to it and forced the owners to shut their shops. The Savita community has not given a haircut to anyone in the village since they closed their shops.
