The Karantaka police arrested six students of Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT) on Wednesday, on charges of possessing and consuming drugs, reports Times of India. 

The Udupi police six students of which one person was a Malaysian physiotherapy intern. All the six students were arrested from different apartment blocks in Manipal and were booked under section 21 (b) of NDPS Act after they were medically examined.

The police were tipped off about rampant drug and alcohol abuse in the campus on Saturday.

“The information about rampant drug abuse in colleges was brought to the notice of Udupi police during a phone-in programme on Saturday. Callers have been telling us about drug peddlers, but this time some callers gave us specific inputs which helped us crack the case," Sanjeev M Patil, Udupi superintendent of police told The Times of India.

Pointing out that drug abuse was rampant in Manipal, the senior police official said that the possibilities that these arrested students doubling up as drug peddlers was high. 

"We will carry out a thorough investigation to end drug abuse in colleges. We have formed teams and the drive will continue till Manipal is free from drug and alcohol abuse," he added.

The nature of the substance is yet to be known, since the police is awaiting medical reports.

Earlier in March this year, a student was arrested with 1.39 kg of ganja from his apartment. Prior to this too, students from MIT has been booked for drug use.

In 2011, two students were arrested, who were in possession of 1.3 kg of marijuana and were later sent to judicial custody.
