A 13-year-old schoolboy in Karnataka’s Mysuru hung himself after he was allegedly accused of stealing a classmate’s money, on Tuesday.

Pavan, a seventh standard student of Sri Bhyraveshwara School in Metagalli police limits, killed himself at his residence after returning from school. At the time of the incident, Pavan was reportedly alone at home. A report in The New Indian Express states that Pavan collected the house key from a neighbour’s house and hung himself from the ceiling.

According to multiple media reports, Pavan was accused of stealing Rs 100 from a classmate and had taken the extreme step of taking his own life after he was reprimanded.

The Times of India quotes Metagalli police inspector HT Sunil Kumar as saying that Pavan took Rs 100 from a friend’s bag last week and spent Rs 30. But, having realised his mistake, Pavan returned the remaining sum of money to the friend.

However, the school officials reportedly summoned Pavan’s father Jayasheelan to the school and apprised him of the situation. The school authorities informed Jayasheelan that his son had confessed to stealing money from a friend.

The police suspect that Pavan committed suicide due to the grief after his father scolded him over the stealing episode and said that Pavan was in school uniform when he killed himself.

The New Indian Express states that Pavan’s father has lodged a police complaint alleging that his son was humiliated by the school authorities. His father told media persons that he had given Rs 100 to Pavan, who spent a portion of it.
