Karnataka to set up panel after Kerala urges to review Bandipur night ban

Written by : TNM

Two days after Kerala Chief Minister called on Karnataka CM Siddharamiah urging him to relax the night ban imposed at the Bandipur Tiger Reserve, a panel comprising legal and wildlife experts and officials will soon be constituted, reported The New Indian Express.Vinay Luthra, the Karnataka Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF), said that the panel would re-examine the issue and understand the effect of allowing 20 vehicles. Currently, 16 vehicles are being allowed, 8 from each State in the event of any emergency.“The government will constitute a committee as the whole issue has to be looked into as per the High Court’s orders. The issue of relaxing timings has to be examined thoroughly as the ban was imposed in view of the frequent wild animal deaths on the highways,” he was quoted by the paper. At present, vehicular movement is restricted from 9 pm to 6 pm along the Gundlupet-Wayanad and HD Kote-Mananthavadi highways which pass through the Tiger Reserve. The Kerala government has requested that the ban now moved to from 10 pm to 5 pm to allow more vehicles to pass through.Reacting to this, Praveen Bhargav a former Wildlife Board member was quoted as, “Kerala can use the alternative routes that have been developed by Karnataka. Any changes that Karnataka makes will have to be ratified by the state and national wildlife boards. The demand for a two-hour relaxation by Kerala will prove to be a disaster as many animals cross the highways after dusk. The ban should have ideally been from 6 pm to 6 am. The whole purpose of this ban will be defeated. We have to look for a permanent solution for goods and passenger traffic in sanctuaries and reserves.”
