Karnataka hospital ceiling collapses, injuring 3-day-old baby

Written by : TNM Staff

Late on Monday evening, there was panic in the maternity ward of a hospital in Karnataka's Kolar, after a portion of the ceiling came crashing down.

The incident happened in SNR district hospital at around 6.30 pm, when a 3x4 ft portion of the ceiling collapsed, injuring a 3-day-old baby and his mother, reports The Times of India

Nethra, a resident of Toppanahalli in Bangarpet had given birth to a baby boy on May 20 and was admitted in the ward. As the ceiling collapsed, it fell on the newborn baby. While the baby was injured, reports indicate that Nethra was unhurt.

District surgeon Dr H R Shivakumar told TOI that the ceiling was old and had hence collapsed and added that other babies and their mothers will be shifted out of the ward to safer places in the hospital. Deccan Herald reports that at the time of the accident, there were at least 30 newborns and their mothers in the ward.

According to reports, the baby was referred to Indira Gandhi Institute of Child Health (IGICH) in Bengaluru after tests including CT scan was performed on the baby. When TOI reached out to IGICH director Dr Asha, the doctor informed that the baby's condition was stable.

“The baby has suffered a contusion on the right side of the head,“ she said. A contusion is caused when blood vessels are damaged," the doctor was quoted as saying.

A complaint has reportedly been lodged at the Kolar police station.

A similar incident was reported from Gurgaon last year. In that case, a portion of the false ceiling of gynaecology ward at Civil Hospital had collapsed, injuring a newborn baby girl and her mother.
