In an enforcement drive in north Bengaluru conducted by the transport department on Thursday, over a 100 taxis operating under Ola and Uber were seized.

The taxis were seized from Yeshwantpur, Hebbal, Nagwara and Mekhri Circle areas after over 2000 cabs were checked for violating the Karnataka On- Demand Transportation Technology Aggregators Rules, 2016, reported The Times of India.

The taxis that were seized on Thursday were reportedly found to be running without licence or valid documents, with invalid number plates and some of the owners were tax defaulters, reported TOI.

Earlier in April, Karnataka transport department, in a first, had said that it would step up its crackdown on ride-hailing services Uber and Ola for implementing surge pricing that violates norms.

The rules say the maximum fare cannot exceed Rs 19.50 per km for AC cabs, including taxes. For non-AC cabs, the maximum fare is Rs 14.50 per km.

A note from the transport commissioner's office said: “These companies are misleading innocent drivers and owners of cabs to carry passengers without following the rules and violating permit conditions.”
