The News Minute | November 19, 2014 | 1.42 pm ISTKarnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has said that the government would discuss the anti-superstition law before the Cabinet took a decision.Speaking to media persons on Wednesday, Siddaraamaiah said that the government would discuss the draft law.On November 17, 208 seers of various Mutts in the state began a hunger strike demanding that the government pass the law during the winter session of the legislature session scheduled to begin in Belagavi on December 9. The Congress government had first proposed the law last year during the winter session in Belagavi, but no further move was taken in that direction as there was stiff opposition from the BJP and Hindutva groups.The seers, who have gotten together under the aegis of the Forum for Progressive Seers and led by Channamalla Veerabhadra Swami of the Nidumamidi Mutt in Bagepalli (Kolar district) have made similar demands in the past, demanding an end to superstitious practices. The hunger strike has been supported by rationalist groups, Dalit organizations, Karnataka Jnana Vijnana Samiti, pourakarmika unions, and eminent persons such as writer K. Marulasiddappa, educationist K. Allama Prabhu Bettadur, former chairperson of the state backward classes commission C.S. Dwarakanath and activist N. Prabha.
