The News Minute | March 7, 2015 | 09:28 am IST Air pollution in Bengaluru seems to be soaring at an alarming rate. The Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KPSCB) told the High Court that Bengaluru is heading towards a 'Beijing-like' air pollution catastrophe, states a report by Bangalore Mirror. Fine dust in the air caused by vehicular traffic and bad roads affects the way we breathe. The fine dust gets into the lungs, which could be life-threatening and also cause allergies. It is following a court order, that the KPSCB monitored air in 13 locations across the city. City dwellers also breathe very high doses of Respirable Suspended Particulate Matter (RSPM), mostly during late evenings and early mornings when temperatures are at their lowest, adds the report.Dr Vaman Acharya, Chairman, State Pollution Control Board told Bangalore Mirror that "Unlike other cities with similar pollution levels, we do not get rains; we lack humidity; and also have lower wind speeds. In other cities, the dust gets washed away due to heavy winds, rains or it settles on the ground due to humidity. Rising mercury levels during the day keep pushing the particles upwards and falling temperature during night brings them down".
