The dramatic saga of the Karnataka elections continued on Friday, with the issue reaching the doorsteps of the apex court in the national capital. The Supreme Court's order for a floor test on May 19 comes a day after BJP leader BS Yedyyurappa took oath as the Chief Minister. Reacting to the verdict, Yeddyurappa said he is confident of getting the required majority.

"We welcome the Supreme Court order of floor test at 4 pm on Saturday. We are confident of proving our majority," Yeddyurappa told reporters in Bengaluru.

Former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah too exuded confidence of getting a majority.

Social media was quick to react, with the hashtag #FloorTest trending on Twitter.

State units of the Congress and BJP remained confident, while embracing the verdict.

National leaders of both parties soon followed suit. RS Surjewala of the Congress led the charge against Yeddyurappa, while Union Minister Prakash Javdekar reiterated the BJP’s stand.

In his tweet, Congress President Rahul Gandhi called the verdict a vindication of his party’s stand on the Karnataka Governor.
In light of the bureaucratic shuffle initiated by Yeddyurappa soon after taking charge, one of the decisions of the SC verdict involved a stay on any major policy decision being taken by the new government. In light of this, the working president of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee, Dinesh Gundu Rao, was quick to react.
Abhishek Manu Singhvi, lawyer for the Congress in the case, termed the verdict as “historic”.
