Firefox 53.0 release: New compact themes and introduction of Quantum Compositor

Written by : S. Mahadevan

Popular internet browser has just released it latest version Firefox 53.0 (made available to mainstream users from April 19). The official blog on Mozilla’s website claims that the new ‘release makes Firefox faster and more stable with a separate process for graphics compositing (the Quantum Compositor)’.

Explaining the new features in Firefox 53.0, it says there will be improved graphics stability for the users of the Windows OS. The ‘compact’ dark and light themes, based on the edition meant for the developers, are now being made available to the mainstream users as well. The ‘private’ tabs or browsing windows will now open with the lightweight themes.

There is a feature to indicate the reading time a page will take once the ‘Reader Mode’ is clicked.

The Quantum Compositor or Project Quantum as Mozilla calls it has been modified to match the latest in the hardware specifications and therefore offer faster page loading and animations while improving the real-time user interactivity and browsing experience. The changes effected overall are expected to bring down or eliminate the instances of browser crashes and impart better stability.

Some of the other changes brought about in Firefox 53.0 are listed below:

- Those PCs still running on Windows XP and Vista will not receive support on Firefox 53.0; they will receive updates only with Firefox 52.0

- Users of 32-bit MAC OS X will also have to switch to Firefox ESR 52 to continue receiving security updates since Firefox 53.0 won’t support this OS any longer

- Firefox 53.0 will no longer support Linx OS running with Pentium 4 and AMD Opteron processors

- Site permission requests designs have been thoroughly overhauled – there will now be lesser misses and will be easier to understand

There are also modifications and improvements directed at the developer community to make the use of the browser more productive for them.
