It was in director Balachander’s Apoorva Ragangal released on August 18, 1975 that super star Rajinikanth first made an appearance.

Naman Ramachandran writes in Rajinikanth: The Definitive Biography, “It was 27 March 1975. Balachander, with some foresight, realized that Rajinikanth would be good at making an entry, and the shot was suitably dramatic. In a low-angle shot, B.S. Lokanathan’s camera is at ground level, looking up at a pair of closed gates. A dishevelled-looking Rajinikanth, sporting a stubble and wearing an ill-fitting suit, flings the gates open and strides forward. The frame freezes and the Tamil text ‘Shruti Bedam’ (A Variation of Pitch) appears on the screen.”

After the film shoot was over, director Balachander told a journalist that the actor called Rajinikanth will leave a mark in cinema. The rest is history.

Its been 39 years since Apporva Ragangal released and Rajinikanth fans are celebrating. Of course, Rajini fans need to excuse to celebrate! Most fans have even changed their display pictures on social media to #39yearsofRajinism
