Just a quarter of Indian films have women in speaking roles, a study conducted by the United Nations supported study shows.

According to a PTI report, just 24.9 percent of Indian films show women in speaking roles, and around 35 percent of women characters are shown in some form of nudity.

The study was conducted by the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media and supported by the United Nations and the Rockerfeller Foundation. Indian films also rank first in showing women characters as attractive.

Another parameter the study looked as was the presence of women behind the screen, as directors and writers. While the Indian film industry did better on the number of women directors, there were fewer writers than when compared to the global average. According to a report published by The Independent found that the when women directed or wrote a film, the number of women characters on screen increased significantly.

The ratio of men to women in the film industry is 6.2 for every woman.

Other countries which were studied in the report include China, Japan, Australia, UK, US, France, Germany, South Korea, Russia, Brazil.
