Even as the people of Andhra reel under a heat wave and a water crisis, the animals are also facing the brunt, as four thirsty elephants wandered into human habitation in the state on Sunday.

The incident which occurred in a village in Srikakulam district, saw the elephants uproot and damage many trees as they wandered around in search of water.

Srikakulam district forest officer Ch Santhi Swaroop told the Times of India:

“Elephants like water. As the herd walks miles in a day in search of food, they want to rest in water bodies. The tuskers were searching for water and accidentally walked into the two mandals. However, we have taken all precautionary measures to see that the herd does not hurt people and damage the crops."

TOI also reported that the Union ministry has been requested to sanction Rs 50 lakh for taking requisite measures for protecting the wild animals with steps like solar fencing, lighting and digging artificial water bodies.
