The Andhra Pradesh Police on Friday said it shot dead a robber in a gunfight in Rajasthan's Jalore district.

Bheem Singh, allegedly involved in a Rs 5 crore highway robbery in Andhra Pradesh's Kurnool district last month, was gunned down by a police team near Sanchore town after a vehicle chase.

A woman was also killed after being hit by the accused's car.

Police sources said a team from Kurnool -- which was in Rajasthan to probe the robbery -- surrounded the accused and asked him to surrender but he opened fire and tried to escape.

The Deccan Chronicle quoted Kurnool Superintendent of Police Gopinath Jetti saying that Bheem Singh had opened fire at the AP police at about 1:45 pm on Friday, following which the police personnel retaliated.

Police chased him and in the exchange of fire, Bheem Singh was killed while another person sitting with him in the car was injured.

Interestingly, the Rajasthan police was informed of the shootout only after the incident.

"We were not informed by the Andhra police before they arrived here. We got to know about the incident only when Bhim Singh was gunned down and a 50-year-old woman was killed in the chase," Additional SP (Jalore) Jasaram Bose from the Rajasthan police told the Times of India.

An Andhra Police team had reached Jalore following a tip-off that Bheem Singh, who hails from the Sanchore area, was hiding there.

Bheem Singh was allegedly involved in several other criminal cases too.
