Amid heightened protests against the Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over his handling of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy went to New Delhi on October 7 to express solidarity with Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi. However, the Delhi police stopped him from joining their protest.
Speaking to media outside the Barakhamba Road police station where Rahul Gandhi and other Congress leaders were detained, Revanth said that instead of arresting the people who have committed mistakes during the SIR, the police had detained Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge.
He said that Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation would eventually lead to Prime Minister Narendra Modi exiting the PM’s chair.
“Narendra Modi is trying to murder democracy. This movement will not end here,” Revanth said.
He said that the SIR was happening under the instructions of PM Modi through Gyanesh Kumar. “They are trying to remove the voting rights of people. They are creating two types of people in the country, one with voting rights and those without,” he said.
Revanth said that the BJP-led Union government had previously misused the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for political gains by targeting opposition leaders, and now, they are using even the Election Commission of India (ECI).
“From the police action against Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi, we can see the intolerance of Narendra Modi and [Union Home Minister] Amit Shah. Today, to escape the consequences of their mistakes, to save their posts, they are getting police to attack Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi and other leaders,” CM Revanth said, condemning the detention of Congress leaders amid the protests in Delhi.
He added that if Gyanesh Kumar doesn’t resign, PM Modi himself would have to quit his post.
