The Tamil Nadu government on Thursday, August 13, exchanged 104 memoranda of understanding (MoUs) at its first major investment conclave since the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) assumed office. The event included 97 company MoUs involving investments of Rs 67,452 crore and seven institutional pacts. These agreements are projected to create 1,06,998 jobs.
The ‘Vettri Tamil Nadu Investment Conclave 2026’ was held in the presence of Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay. The government said the latest commitments took the total investments attracted in its first 100 days to Rs 1.02 lakh crore.
The closed-door event, from which members of the news media were excluded, saw the MoUs exchanged in the presence of the Chief Minister. Industries, Investment Promotion and Commerce Minister S Keerthana said the government was seeking to position Tamil Nadu as a destination for domestic and foreign investment while expanding into higher-value industries.
Data centres accounted for the largest share of the investments at Rs 26,417 crore, followed by automobiles at Rs 17,073 crore, renewable energy at Rs 15,787 crore and critical engineering at Rs 9,525 crore.
Lighthouse Green Data Centre committed Rs 10,000 crore to establish a hyperscale data centre in Thoothukudi, making it the single largest investment announced at the event. Airtel’s data-centre subsidiary Nxtra committed Rs 1,417 crore.
The investments were spread beyond Tamil Nadu’s established industrial hubs. According to the government, 54 projects worth Rs 40,722 crore, with 61,480 projected jobs, will be located outside the state’s four core industrial districts.
Ramanathapuram is set to receive its first major industrial investment, with Phoenix Kothari Footwear Limited committing Rs 1,000 crore to a project expected to create 10,000 jobs. The project is also expected to create employment opportunities for women in the district.
Kancheepuram received the highest number of projects, with 20, followed by Chennai with 14, Tiruvallur with 13 and Thoothukudi with 10.
The Hinduja Group, which has been operating for 111 years, committed Rs 2,500 crore across renewable energy, electric mobility, automotive, financial services, energy, battery-charging infrastructure and digital mobility solutions.
A key component of the commitment is a 200 MW renewable energy project by Hinduja Renewables Energy Private Limited, spanning solar, wind and battery technologies.
Titan will invest Rs 1,000 crore in Hosur to expand facilities for premium watches, jewellery and automation equipment for its electronics business, creating 1,200 jobs. Lucas TVS will invest Rs 2,500 crore across multiple facilities.
International companies also announced fresh investments. Thirty projects worth Rs 22,268 crore, with 38,357 projected jobs, were signed with investors from 16 countries, including Japan, Germany, France, South Korea, the US and Australia. Twenty-five of the companies signing MoUs are establishing their first facility in India in Tamil Nadu.
The space sector saw two major commitments. Chennai-based Agnikul Cosmos will invest Rs 400 crore in launch assembly and integration operations for its reusable, liquid-propelled launch vehicles. Hyderabad-based Skyroot Aerospace will invest Rs 250 crore to establish storage, assembly, integration and testing facilities in Thoothukudi.
The government also said foundation stones were laid for 13 industrial projects worth Rs 7,152 crore, expected to create 6,624 jobs across eight locations. These include a Rs 1,300-crore solar-module plant by Vikram Solar in Tirunelveli and a Rs 2,500-crore electronics components project by L&T in Coimbatore.
A Tamil Nadu Investor Promotion Commission, chaired by the Chief Secretary, will oversee projects involving investments above Rs 200 crore or projected employment of more than 5,000.
The government has also introduced a 21-day window for approvals, licences and no-objection certificates, with applications left unaddressed beyond the deadline. Keerthana said the government was focused on improving ease of doing business and developing its industrial policy with inputs from industry and other stakeholders.
“Tamil Nadu now has a decade of ambition ahead, that to reach a $1.5tn economy, move decisively into higher-value industries, create opportunity across regions and make investment translate into shared prosperity,” she said.
“Our Chief Minister has given us an ambitious target: a $1.5 trillion economy by 2036. It is a big number, but its impact is even larger. For a young graduate, growth means a better job. For a woman, it can mean economic independence. For an entrepreneur, it means the confidence to take a risk. For a family, it means upward mobility. And for a district like Ramanathapuram, which is receiving its first Industrial Investment today, it means that young people will not have to leave home to find a job. That is what economic growth looks like when you zoom in,” Keerthana added.
