Traffic restrictions announced in Chennai for New Year's eve

The GCTP will be deploying ANPR and CCTV cameras to detect traffic violations, including drunken driving, overspeeding, and rash driving in Chennai.

In anticipation of large crowds celebrating New Year's Eve at Marina Beach, Elliot Beach, and other popular locations, the Greater Chennai Traffic Police (GCTP) has announced traffic diversions and parking restrictions to ensure safety and minimize congestion on December 31. 

According to a press statement, GCTP has announced that the Foreshore service Road will be closed for traffic from 7 pm on December 31, 2024, to 6 am on January 1, 2025. Further, parking vehicles will also not be permitted inside the Foreshore service road from 7 pm on December 31. Kamarajar Salai, from War memorial to light house, will be closed for vehicular traffic from 8 pm on December 31 to 6 am on January 1, 2025. All the vehicles will be allowed to exit only through the light house junction.

These will be the vehicle diversion points that will be in effect:

  • Vehicles coming from Adyar intended for Kamarajar Salai will be diverted at Greenways Road and South Canal Road junction towards Mandaveli, RA Puram 2nd main road, RK Mutt Road, Luz Mylapore to reach their destinations.

  • Vehicles coming from Dr RK Salai side intended for Kamarajar Salai will be diverted at VM Street junction towards RK Mutt Road, Luz Junction, Mandaveli, South canal bank road to reach Santhome High Road and Greenways Road.

  • Vehicles coming from Parry's intended for Kamarajar Salai will be diverted at RBI subway (North) towards North Fort Wall Road, Muthusamy Road, Muthusamy bridge, Wallajah Point, Anna Salai to reach their destinations.

  • Vehicles will not be allowed towards Kamarajar Salai from Wallajah Point, Swamy Sivananda Salai (near Doordarshan Kendra) Wallajah Salai (near Victoria Hostel Road) Bharathi Salai x Victoria Hostel Road junction, Dr Besant Road (near MRTS), Llyods Road x Natesan Road and from Natesan Road x Dr RK Salai junction.

  • The entire loop road from South canal bank road up to Light house junction will be closed for vehicular traffic as per the necessity.

  • On flag staff road, vehicles will not be allowed from Wallajah Point towards the War memorial from 8 pm.

  • MTC buses bound to North from Greenways Point will be diverted at RK Mutt U-turn towards Thiruvengadam street, Devanathan street, RK Mutt road, Venkateswara agraharam street (Saibaba temple), Nageshwara Park to reach their destination.

  • MTC buses bound from North to south will be diverted at RBI North to reach Wallajah Point through Muthusamy Point, Anna Salai, Anna Rotary, Cathedral Road, VM Street junction, Luz junction, Mandaveli junction to reach South canal road and proceed to their destination.

  • All the flyovers will be closed for traffic from 10 pm on December 31 till 6 am on January 1, 2025.

  • Vehicles will not be allowed towards 6th avenue from 8 pm on December 31 till 6 am on January 1, 2025.

  • 6th avenue will be blocked at 5th avenue junction, 4th Main Road junction, 3rd Main Road junction, 16th Cross street junction and 7th Avenue MG Road junction towards Annai Velankanni Church.

Flyovers to be closed

A total of 23 flyovers will be closed across different zones:

  • East (8 flyovers): Music Academy Flyover, GRH Flyover, Peters Road Flyover, Alwarpet Flyover Mouth, Gandhi Mandapam Flyover, Indira Nagar U-Turn, Pantheon Flyover, and Mahalingapuram Flyover.

  • South (10 flyovers): Gemini Flyover and GN Chetty (incoming), GKM Flyover, Vani Mahal Flyover, Usman Flyover, Rengarajapuram Flyover (from Chakrapani Street), Mahalingapuram Flyover (southern side), Vadapalani Flyover, Adyar Flyover (one-way), Velachery Flyover, and Airport Flyover Bridge.

  • North (5 flyovers): New Vallalar Bridge, Anna Arch Flyover, 100 Feet Road Flyover, Thirumangalam Bridge, and Murasoli Maran Overbridge (North).

Parking arrangements

Parking is organized at various locations to ensure smooth traffic flow and accessibility: Swami Sivananda Salai (from Doordarshan Kendra towards Periyar statue, single-line parking), Wallajah Road (near Tamil Nadu State Guest House towards Anna statue, single-line parking), Island Ground, PWD Ground (opposite the Secretariat), Press Club Road, PWD (for police vehicles only), Kalaivanar Arangam, Victoria Hostel, Bharathi Salai (from Victoria Hotel Road x Bharathi Salai junction, single-line parking), Lloyds Road (near the office of the Commissioner for Differently-Abled towards Natesan Road, single-line parking), Queen Mary’s College campus, Lady Wellington School, NKT School, Dr. Besant Road (near MRTS towards Ice House, single-line parking), Bharath Scout Campus, South Canal Road (towards Mandaveli), and South Canal Road (towards Pattinampakkam).

Parking is designated on one side of the following roads in Besant Nagar for single-line parking: 4th Avenue, 3rd Main Road, 4th Main Road, 5th Avenue, 2nd Avenue, and 3rd Avenue. Additionally, parking is available at Olcott School, Besant Nagar.

The GCTP will also be deploying ANPR and CCTV cameras to detect traffic violations, including drunken driving, overspeeding, and rash driving. The police urge all motorists to adhere to traffic rules and regulations to ensure a safe and enjoyable New Year celebration.
