After widespread public anger, the Tamil Nadu police have reportedly formed special teams to apprehend a man accused of abducting and sexually assaulting a 10-year-old schoolgirl near Gummidipoondi in Tiruvallur district.
According to reports, the attack occurred on July 12. The child was walking home alone from school on a deserted street when the accused allegedly abducted her. In CCTV footage that has now gone viral, the man can be seen following the girl before abducting her.
Reports say the girl fled home after the assault and informed her grandmother, who took her to the Ponneri Government Hospital. She was then referred to a government hospital in Chennai for further treatment.
The Arambakkam police have registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
Reports suggest that the police are also reviewing additional footage from nearby streets and speaking to local residents who may have seen the suspect around the time the crime occurred.
The child is currently under medical care, and officials are awaiting a detailed report from the hospital.
Former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Tamil Nadu president K Annamalai condemned the incident and said in a statement, “It is deeply disturbing that even after five days since the crime, the culprit has not yet been arrested. The fact that such criminals, who engage in sexual offences without regard for the victim being a minor, are freely roaming outside shows how dangerous the society is.”
