A nine-year-old Class 4 student was allegedly sexually assaulted by an unidentified man while she was walking home in Denkanikottai in Tamil Nadu’s Krishnagiri district on the evening of August 12, Wednesday.
The child was walking home with three other children, but the three reached their homes before her, leaving her alone when the alleged assault took place, according to police.
The incident was reported around 1 am on Thursday after the child’s mother lodged a complaint with the Denkanikottai All Women Police Station (AWPS). Police have registered an FIR under Section 87 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) (kidnapping, abducting or inducing woman to compel her marriage, etc) and Section 5(6) of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
The child was taken to Krishnagiri Government Hospital for a medical examination. Police said the examination will help determine whether a sexual assault took place.
A police team has also visited the scene and is collecting evidence and other information as part of the investigation.
The child does not know the identity of the alleged accused, but has told police that she would be able to identify him.
