It was once again a day of hectic political developments in Tamil Nadu. In the morning, DMK president MK Stalin met leaders of the Communist Party of India, the Communist Party of India (Marxist), and the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK).

It is learnt that during the meeting, MK Stalin spoke about the possibility of the AIADMK staking a claim to form the government, with others either extending outside support or becoming part of the government.

When asked about talks between the AIADMK and DMK, VCK leader Thol Thirumavalavan said: “It doesn’t look like it took shape. If it does, we will announce our stand.”

Meanwhile, the DMK legislature party passed a resolution authorising MK Stalin to take decisions that would enable a stable government in the state.

On record, several DMK leaders, including TKS Elangovan and Saravanan Annadurai, insisted that no alliance was possible between the AIADMK and DMK.

One DMK source said that several leaders in the party have conveyed to MK Stalin that accepting the AIADMK proposal of forming a government was the need of the hour, and that it was necessary to teach the Congress a lesson. These leaders are reportedly angry over the Congress’s sudden decision to leave the DMK alliance and join Vijay.

Meanwhile, Governor Arlekar met Vijay on the afternoon of May 7 and once again rejected his stake to form the government. The Governor reportedly told Vijay that he did not have the numbers. Vijay’s TVK had won 108 seats in the Assembly and received support from five Congress MLAs. However, to form a government and cross the simple majority mark, Vijay still needs a few more MLAs on his side.
