Putting an end to speculations, actor and Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) president Vijay declared emphatically on July 4 that his party will not align with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the 2026 Assembly elections in the state.
“There will never be any alliance with our ideological enemies and divisive forces. BJP hopes to profit from creating communal disharmony. Such venomous activities may work anywhere else, but they will never work in Tamil Nadu,” Vijay said.
“Any alliance led by TVK will always be against the BJP and DMK (Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam),” he added.
Vijay was speaking at the TVK’s executive committee meeting held at the party’s headquarters in Panayur, Chennai. Twenty resolutions were passed at the meeting. As per these resolutions, Vijay will be the TVK’s chief minister candidate. Decisions regarding alliances will be announced in the future by party leaders, according to another resolution.
Vijay slams BJP and DMK
At the meeting, Vijay said, “Social justice, fraternity and equality are deeply rooted in Tamil Nadu’s soil. BJP hopes to gain political profit by disrespecting Periyar, Annadurai or other leaders of this state. This will never happen.”
Vijay was reacting to a viral video clip from the Murugan conference hosted in Madurai on June 22 by the BJP and far-right groups such as the Hindu Munnani and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). The clip was from a presentation made at the conference that displayed images of Periyar, CN Annadurai, and M Karunanidhi — all revered Dravidian leaders — describing them as “atheist jackals” and “fake Dravidianists”.
A resolution was passed condemning the BJP for “disrespecting Periyar and Annadurai”.
The BJP’s ally, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), which sent representatives to the event, was widely criticised earlier for not condemning these derogatory comments. “TVK is not DMK or AIADMK to ally with the BJP out of self-interest,” Vijay said.
Saying that TVK would always be on the side of farmers, Vijay condemned the ruling DMK for the Parandur airport in Kancheepuram district.
The Parandur greenfield airport project has been a contentious issue since its announcement in August 2022 by the DMK. Residents and farmers of the region have raised concerns over the potential environmental and economic impacts of acquiring 2,171 hectares of land, which include 1,386.43 hectares of agricultural land and 577 hectares of water bodies.
TVK has been strongly supporting the protests by farmers and activists in Parandur.
“What is the need to destroy the livelihood of farmers, their homes, and so many acres of land and water bodies to build an airport? How can you shamelessly call yourself a people’s leader?” Vijay asked while reading out from a letter he said he wrote to CM Stalin.
Other resolutions
A resolution condemning custodial deaths in Tamil Nadu was passed. Resolutions were also passed against the acquisition of agricultural land for the Melma State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu (SIPCOT) unit in Tiruvannamalai district.
TVK also demanded action against illegal mining in the state and welfare measures for paddy and sugar farmers and power loom workers. Further, the party asked the state government to accept the demands of the Joint Action Council of Teachers Organisations – Government Employees Organisation (JACTO-GEO).
The party also condemned the Union government for “attempting to cover up Tamil Nadu’s culture at Keezhadi”. Further, resolutions were passed against the Union government’s proposed ‘One Nation, One Election’ and the delimitation of Lok Sabha constituencies.
