Veteran music composer Ilaiyaraaja, on Monday, December 16, has dismissed as "false rumours" reports that he was allegedly barred from entering the sanctum sanctorum of the Srivilliputhur Aandal temple in Tamil Nadu’s Virudhunagar.
The composer issued a statement refuting claims that he was subjected to caste-based discrimination, a controversy that erupted following circulating videos and media reports.
"Some people are spreading false rumours about me. I have never betrayed my self-respect at any time or place," Ilaiyaraaja said. "These are baseless reports. Fans and the public should not believe them,” he added.
The controversy began after initial reports suggested that Ilaiyaraaja was stopped from entering the sanctum sanctorum of the temple in Virudhunagar on December 15. Videos circulating on social media show the composer entering the sanctum before being asked to leave by a temple priest.
The incident sparked public outcry, with many alleging that the musician was asked to leave due to his caste, leading to widespread criticism of the temple administration and the state government.
Previously, sources at the Srivilluputhur temple had told TNM that it is routine practise not to allow devotees to enter the sanctum. “Ilaiyaraaja stood on the Kulasekara step to see the idol. The crowd pushed him inside. No devotee is allowed inside this area, hence we asked him to step outside,” they said.
Virudhunagar District Collector Dr VP Jeyaseelan had also told TNM earlier that the Joint Commissioner of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department has sought a report into the matter from the temple administration.
