IIT Madras research scholar sexually harassed by bakery worker outside campus

Tamil Nadu’s Kotturpuram police arrested a bakery worker on Tuesday, January 14, for sexually harassing a research scholar from the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras (IIT-M). The incident took place at a tea shop located on the Taramani-Velachery main road in Chennai. He was arrested and later remanded to judicial custody. 

According to a statement released by IIT-M, the accused Sriram (29), who hails from Uttar Pradesh, had been employed at a bakery. He sexually harassed the IIT-M research scholar on Tuesday, while she was at a tea shop along with her friends. Upon witnessing the incident, the scholar’s friends and onlookers nabbed Sriram and handed him over to the Kotturpuram police station, where a complaint was registered, followed by a First Information Report (FIR).

“IIT Madras has installed CCTV cameras across the campus and has taken adequate measures to ensure the safety and security of its inhabitants. Students are also advised to take precautions while going outside. The institute is extending all necessary support to the woman student,” the institute said in the statement.
