The Tamil Nadu-based far-right organisation Hindu Makkal Katchi (HMK) has sparked controversy by calling for the makers of Viduthalai - Part 2 to be charged under the draconian Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). In a statement released on December 23, HMK accused the film of “glorifying Naxalism” and demanded that the National Investigation Agency (NIA) take immediate action. As the film is produced by Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin’s Red Giant Movies, they alleged that the DMK government is encouraging Naxalism in the state.
“The filmmakers, particularly Red Giant, should be charged under UAPA for justifying and glorifying Naxalism. The NIA should take note of this film that normalises bearing arms and terrorism,” the statement said.
“In the garb of exposing police custodial violence, the film has honoured Naxalism. The film has turned the theatre hall into a stage, making heroes of terrorists among the youth. The DMK is encouraging actions that will make Tamil Nadu India’s next Red Corridor. Tamil Nadu must learn about Naxalism from eastern states.”
Veterimaran’s Viduthalai - Part 2 released on December 20 after much anticipation. The film follows the 2023 prequel Viduthalai that tells the story of young police officer Kumaresan (Soori) and armed Left revolutionary Perumal (Vijay Sethupathi).
“Anyone who opposes the construction of a road is a scoundrel. All the youngsters who cheered and whistled for the film must learn about the states impacted by Naxalism.”
The organisation also alleged that migrant labourers coming to Tamil Nadu from Naxal-affected regions would mock the “revolution” depicted in the film, claiming it to be a far cry from the real struggles faced by those in conflict zones.
