The Election Commission of India has announced by-elections in three states and a Union Territory, namely West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Assam, and Puducherry. The by-elections for Tamil Nadu will be held on October 6 and votes will be counted on October 9.

By-elections will be conducted in Madurantakam and Dharapuram Assembly constituencies. Both seats are reserved for Scheduled Caste candidates.

The polls were necessitated after Maragatham Kumaravel and P Sathyabama, who won the seats with All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) tickets in April this year, had stepped down to join theTamilaga Vettri Kazhagam(TVK). 

In five constituencies where election petitions are pending – Ambasamudram, Karur, Viralimalai, Perundurai, and Tiruchirapally East – the ECI has not announced by-polls. 

The petitions filed include ones against the victory of C Joseph Vijay of Tiruchirapalli East, S Jayakumar of Perundurai, C Vijayabaskar of Viralimalai, M R Vijayabaskar of Karur, and Esakki Subaya of Ambasamurdram. 

In Puducherry, the Thattanchavady seat fell vacant after N Rangasamy resigned. Now the Chief Minister, Rangasamy had contested from both Thattanchavady and Mangalam seats.

Nominations can be filed from September 9 to 16.
