
The Indian Metrological Department (IMD), on November 27, issued a cyclone warning to Tamil Nadu as the deep depression over the Bay of Bengal continues to intensify. This deep depression will continue to move north-northwestwards closer to the Tamil Nadu coast, skirting Sri Lanka, in the next 12 hours and is very likely to develop into a cyclonic storm, IMD said.
The deep depression intensified in the last six hours and is presently lying 590 kilometres and 400 kilometres from the Chennai and Nagapattinam coasts respectively, over southwest Bay of Bengal, IMD has further said. IMD also added that the system’s path will be tracked closely over the next 48 hours. The storm’s landfall is presently unknown.
The Regional Metrological Centre (RMC) has meanwhile issued an orange alert for the following three hours in Chennai, Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Tenkasi, Thirunelveli, Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu and in Puducherry and Karaikal.
According to popular weather blogger Pradeep John, The deep depression/cyclone may cross the coast between Parangipettai, Cuddalore and Chennai around November 30. This will bring heavy rains on November 29 and very heavy to extremely heavy rains on November 30 to Chennai, he added.
The RMC has also said that as of 5:30 am, November 27, Nagapattinam and Chennai had received the highest rainfall in the preceding 24 hours. Nagapattinam received 164 mm of rain; Chennai New Manali town area registered 133.9 mm; Kathivakkam registered 111.9 mm; Meenambakam registered 60 mm and Ennore Port area recorded 77.5 mm.
