The All India Congress Committee (AICC), on Friday, April 3, released its list of 28 candidates for the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, finalising nominees for constituencies allotted to the party under its alliance with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK).
In an official press release issued from New Delhi, AICC General Secretary KC Venugopal stated that selections were made by the Central Election Committee of the Congress.
The list includes prominent leaders and new entrants. Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president K Selvaperunthagai will be fielded from Sriperumbudur (SC) while Dr A Chella Kumar has been named from Krishnagiri.
Notably, PMK leader GKM tamil Kumaran, who recently joined the Congress, has been fielded from the Pennagaram constituency, marking a significant political shift as he moves from the PMK fold to contest under the Congress banner within the DMK-led alliance.
Other key candidates include Durai Chandrasekar from Ponneri (SC), JMH Aassan Maulaana from Velachery, AM Munirathinam from Sholingur, Gopinath Palaniyappan from Erode (East), and B Ramachandran from Udhagamandalam.
The party is fielding S Oorvashi Amirtharaj from Srivaikuntam, Ruby Manoharan from Nanguneri, and Dr Tharagai Cuthbert from Colachel among others, reflecting a mix of experienced leaders and fresh faces across regions.
The Congress list was finalised after consultations between the AICC leadership and state unit chief K Selvaperunthagai.
The Congress has been allotted 28 constituencies as part of its seat-sharing arrangement with the DMK-led alliance. The DMK has already announced 164 candidates, while the BJP, contesting with the AIADMK alliance, released its list of 27 candidates earlier this week.
