The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert for December 11 and 12 indicating heavy rains for Tamil Nadu’s Chennai, Thiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu districts. Meanwhile, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Thiruvarur, and Thanjavur districts were issued an orange alert for December 11, denoting heavy to very heavy rains. According to the IMD, a new low-pressure area formed over the Bay of Bengal, will bring heavy rains to these districts. 

The IMD, in a statement, said that the low-pressure area is very likely to continue moving towards the southwest Bay of Bengal, off the Sri-Lanka–Tamil Nadu coasts around December 11.

Other districts including Pudukottai, Tiruchirapalli, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Kallakurichi, Villupuram, Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Erode, Tiruppur, Salem, Namakkal, and Dindugal may also receive heavy rainfall on December 11 & 12, the IMD notified. 

A yellow alert for heavy rainfall could bring 7-11 cm of rain, while an orange alert for very heavy rains could bring 12-20 cm of rain.

Fishermen have been advised to not venture into the sea between December 10 and December 13.
