A massive fire broke out in Chennai’s MKB Nagar on the evening of Monday, May 26, destroying around 30 makeshift houses in the Vyasarpadi area. The blaze, which began around 5:30 p.m. near the SM Nagar main road behind the Vyasarpadi market, was brought under control after nearly two hours of intense firefighting.
While no casualties or injuries were reported, dozens of families have been rendered homeless.
Firefighters deployed six fire engines from nearby stations including M2, Kurukkuppettai, VOC Nagar, and Vannarpet. The narrow lanes and the close proximity of the huts, constructed from flammable materials such as hay and tarpaulin, made the blaze spread rapidly through the settlement.
Although the official cause of the fire is still under investigation, preliminary speculation points to a possible electrical short circuit.
Authorities have yet to issue any formal statements regarding the rehabilitation of the affected families or the estimated extent of property damage.
Residents of the area are now awaiting support and shelter arrangements as local officials assess the aftermath of the incident
